Every kid deserves a place to come together, have fun and develop themselves

We’re here to make it happen

About

Thundu is a foundation that provides local African initiatives with a sports facility, because every kid deserves the opportunity to develop and have fun while playing sports together

Today, seven out of ten of the world’s extremely poor children live in Africa. Extreme poverty means lacking basic needs like food, healthcare and education. We believe that every child has the right to access education and the simple joy of having fun

Sport, or a sports field, won’t solve the world’s massive problems. However, it can provide a handful of children with a safe place to develop and have fun

We cannot make this impact, for as many children as possible, alone. But with your help, we can do it step by step, field by field and one community at a time

Mission

Our mission is clear: we create a place for African children to come together, have fun and develop themselves while playing sports – in places where it’s most needed. We achieve our mission with your help, and by offering businesses the opportunity to increase their visibility while doing good

We build our sports facilities for African initiatives to strengthen their impactful work. A sports field creates a meeting place for children and the local initiative

Increasing visibility at that meeting place is for every company that wants to make a positive impact. Unlike traditional out-of-home visibility, the sports field offers a way to build (internal) brand strength while being part of something essential

By providing businesses with the opportunity to increase their visibility, we bring business objectives and doing good together

It’s all in the name

Thundu means tree, or oak, in Chichewa – the official language of Malawi. Thundu is also the name of a small village near Zomba (Malawi), named after the large tree where people meet, rest, and seek shade from the burning sun. Beyond being a meeting place, a tree is known for its roots and power

Simply put, it symbolizes individual strength, expression and growth

Due to this strong symbolic link to our mission, we chose to wear the name Thundu proudly, using it as a reminder of our goal: we want to create a meeting place to foster individual strength, expression, and growth

Or, in other words, create a place for African children to come together, have fun and develop themselves while playing sports — in places where it’s most needed

Field philosophy

We do not see our sports fields, as sports fields. Our sports field are gathering places where the right people meet

A sports field can probably be built anywhere with enough space — but we take a different approach. Placed in the right location, our sports field becomes more than just a place to play

By building sports fields for local initiatives, we create a pull effect that draws in local children, empowering these initiatives to make a greater impact
